Puerto del Carmen -
Situated in the Canary Islands on the northernmost island of Lanzarote, the old fishing village of Puerto del Carmen is, these days, the most popular resort on the island. Attracted by its miles of fine sandy beaches, its water sports facilities, its wonderful all-year round climate and its numerous bars, restaurants and clubs, thousands of visitors arrive each year in the town.
The old fishing harbour still displays much of its original atmosphere and charm despite the huge amount of development that has taken place around it in the last 20 years or so, and the harbour is the best place to enjoy a fine meal in one of its many seafood restaurants. The small harbour which is overflowing with sailing vessels and fishing boats is sheltered by a high breakwater, it is from here that you can take a trip in a glass-bottomed boat or maybe even a longer excursion to the island of Fuertaventura or perhaps the tiny Isla Los Lobos.
Eastwards from the harbour the beaches stretch for 6 km or more, many of them with ‘Blue Flag’ status for safety and cleanliness, the beaches include Playa Grande (backed by the main promenade of Puerto del Carmen), Playa de Matagorda with its clear calm waters and Playa de los Pocillos, a great beach for windsurfing and water sports.
The main promenade is lines with shops, restaurants, bars and night-clubs and comes alive at night-time, providing plenty of entertainment for visitors way into the early hours.
Having a good selection of hotels and accommodation, visitors to Puerto del Carmen should have no problem finding somewhere to stay in the resort, most of the hotels cater for package holidays, though independent travellers should be able to find a room outside of the main season.
Puerto del Carmen is situated in the south-eastern region of Lanzarote within the municipality of Tias, and is just a ten minute drive from the airport at Arrecife. Flights are available from most major European airports, you can also reach Puerto del Carmen by ferry from Corralejo on Fuertaventura.
